Meskel Square Underground Parking
The brief
A large-scale underground parking facility developed beneath Meskel Square to address
urban parking demand while preserving the square’s cultural and civic significance. The
project accommodates 1,300 vehicles across two basement levels and incorporates
advanced traffic management systems, public amenities, universal accessibility, fire and
life-safety systems, dedicated bus drop-off areas, and integrated pedestrian circulation.
The design preserves key historical and cultural elements of Meskel Square — including the
traditional Demera celebration site — while enhancing the functionality and accessibility of
one of Addis Ababa’s most important public spaces.
